Etymology Littauer, 2025: Table 1: The specific name antarctica is adjectival, meaning “southern”. In Atta Fabricius, 1804 (feminine), the feminine ending -a is correct. Under recombination with Chelaner (masculine), mandatory gender agreement (Art. 31.2) requires the form antarcticus.
