Primary type information: Type-material: lectotype worker (by designation of Salata & Borowiec, 2019a: 54). Type-locality: lectotype Greece: Scarpanto I., Piles, 22.iv.1934 (C. Menozzi). Type-depository: DSAB. Secondary type information: Paratype-material: 2 paralectotype workers. Paratype-locality: same as for holotype. Paratype-depository: DSAB. Type notes: Original description mentions “numerous workers”; other original syntypes may be in IEUB.

Lectotype designation: Salata & Borowiec, 2019a: 54.
Subspecies of Messor oertzeni: Bolton, 1995b: 253; Legakis, 2011: 9.
