Neoponera commutata (Roger, 1860) valid
Ponera commutata Roger, 1860: 311 (w.) SOUTH AMERICA. Neotropic.
Primary type information: Type-material: 1 syntype worker, 1 syntype queen. Type-locality: none given. Type-depository: MNHN (if syntypes still in existence). Type notes: 1) Perhaps more syntypes originally, but Latreille, 1802: 220, pl. 7, figs. 44A , 44B, illustrates one of each caste. 2) In 1860 Roger nominated Neoponera commutata as the new species name for the Neotropical specimens of Paltothyreus tarsatus Fabricius, 1798, sensu Latreille, 1802a: 200 (misidentification). Neither Latreille nor Roger cited a Neotropical type-locality for the taxon. Two years earlier Smith, 1858a: 94, had observed that this was a Neotropical species, not Afrotropical (see his discussion), and gave Guyana and Brazil (Pará) as localities.
